Administering Medication during School and School Activities-
The New York State Department of Education, the Board of Education, and the Nurse Practice Act, regulate the administration of medication to children during school hours. In addition:
- All medications must be prescribed and a written order be provided to the Nurse’s Office by your child’s healthcare provider; this includes non-prescription medications. Please see medication administration approval form.
- With few exceptions (EPI-PENS for an anaphylactic reaction, metered dose inhalers for asthma or diabetes management supplies), all medications must be stored in the Nurse’s Office. For these few exceptions, healthcare provider and parent/guardian approval for SELF-CARRY must be provided. Please see medication administration approval form.
- Parents/Guardians must provide consent, approving the administering of medications. Please see medication administratin approval form.
- Prescription medication must be in a container dispensed by your pharmacist, labeled with your child’s name and exact dosage
- Over-the-counter medications (including non-prescription creams and ointments) require a healthcare provider’s order. Parents are required to provide the medication, deliver it to school and sign the permission form.
- Parents/Guardians (not students) are expected to bring any medications to school and pick it up when it is no longer required.
- Medication must be picked up at the end of the school year or it will be disposed of according to New York State guidelines.
- All medications and their orders are only valid for a single school year.
Please call the nurse in your child’s school if you have any questions regarding these requirements and expectations.
